Magnus and Will are trying to figure out why the National Guard get’s called in for something only to get called off a few minutes later. Something is happening in the Abnormal world. They have no idea as the Satellite imagery of the area was blocked Magnus tells Will to have Henry look at it as they head to Henry’s lab. He’s already establishing a link to Dr. Lee in the U.N. Magnus’s reply to that, “Bloody Hell.”
In the main Lab Helen and Will walk over to Henry just as he get’s the video link established. On one screen there is Dr. Lee on the other is General Vilanova. The General had been put in charge of the current crisis that was conveniently kept from the Sanctuary Network. Helen tries to understand what is going on when Vilanova sends her a clean Satellite feed of Montana where Abnormals are walking out of a cave. They are denizens of Hollow Earth.
Vilanova is continuing to speak, saying that his priority is the public safety. He even goes to far as to refer to the Abnormals as creatures. He’s concerned about them being a threat. Magnus counters telling him that they are no threat. Going by the images Helen goes on to say that the abnormals look to be in need of help. It doesn’t matter to her that they appeared 60 miles from a populated area. Vilianova wants to arrest and detain the abnormals. Will jumps into the fray asking the General to ease up. Helen point blank replies to the General that he abnormals are not his area of expertise. The General’s response to that; they were the first on the scene. Henry jumps in and points out they jammed every signal they could so that they were the first on the scene. Having dealt with Abnormals Helen bargains for full jurisdiction where they are concerned. The Network knows what they are doing, not the UN. Dr. Lee asks if Magnus has a facility large enough to handle so many abnormals at once. Replying Helen tells her she has a vacant lot, fenced in, and it’s completely private. The abnormals will be safe there. After the conference call is ended Helen tells Will to go out and buy her a vacant lot, she wants Henry to try and figure out why Rana isn’t responding, while she makes other arrangements.
At the lot Kate and Will wait for the soldier to unload the abnormals while others bring in equipment. They meet up with a Lt. Coxswell who is surprised that the camp isn’t as secure as he was led to believe. All Will says is that they didn’t have a lot of time. A few soldiers walk by carrying Razor wire and jump suits. Kate asks what kind of camp they are running to which Coxswell replies he was given full authority to run the camp as he see’s fit. The abnormals came to them for help but the Lotus team is treating them like criminals. Coxswell has nothing to say to this as he is seeing one of him men doing something wrong. All around Kate and Will a military camp is going up around them.
Back at the Sanctuary Helen and Henry are walking through one of the halls establishing the cover story as an army training camp with a Roswell feel to it. They also got a statement from the Chief of Staff back in Washington, where he sends his regards to Magnus. Helen gives Henry praise, but Henry doesn’t feel that what they are doing is right. He feels that this would be the right time to tell the world about abnormals. During the last year more and more abnormal sightings have been on the internet and witnessed by the general population making it harder for Magnus and the rest to protect the abnormals. He wants to know if the humans will ever be ready. Magnus tells him of a time that she had once tried showing Abnormals to the world in the late 1940’s which resulted in disaster. In her opinion the world would never be ready for the knowledge of the existence of abnormals.
In her office Helen is have a video phone call with Dr. Lee. She is trying to convey the sensitivity in which the abnormals from Hollow Earth need to be dealt with. They need to know why more and more of them are coming up to the surface and how they deal with the situation will set the precedent for all future contact. Dr. Lee says that she understands but that her superiors don’t feel the same which is why Helen has no choice but to work with General Vilanova’s men. Changing the subject Dr. Lee inquires about the preparations for the Abnormals arrival. Helen informs her that they were loaded on to two C130’s and then transferred to trucks that would be delivering them soon.
At the camp the Hollow Earth abnormals unload from the back of Military trucks and start heading towards the tents. Kate and Will are there to try and help smooth things over between them and the soldiers. In the crowd Will see’s someone he knows from Praxis, at least he thinks he does. Heading into the crowd he follows her until he has her around a corner. It’s Phallen, she was Rana’s chief council in Praxis, and she was also responsible for orchestrating a rebellion for the outland tribes to control the city. Will takes her to Magnus.
Back at the Sanctuary Will and Magnus listen to Phallen tell them what happened to her. Adam stunned her and left her to be captured. Then she, along with her allies in the senate, were convicted of treason and sentenced to death. Magnus asks how she escaped. She was aided by members of her tribe and after that she was living in outlands. Barely escaping death Phallen abandoned her plans to over throw Praxis. Magnus wants to know why. Phallen knew of their alliance with Rana. Her people had no choice. Rana imposed martial law and her forces clamped down on any opposition to the regime. Then power started to fail followed immediately by rumors that Praxis had been attacked. They didn’t know who had managed it. As the power from the city faded the local outland tribes met agreeing on taking their chances on the surface.
Down in the Main Lab Helen is in conference with three heads of house from her Network, as well as Dr. Lee and General Vilanova. She is relating the story Phallen told her. Dr. Lee wants to know what Rana says. As of yet Helen hasn’t been able to reach her. It’s possible that Rana is busy with the rebellion and Helen is more than inclined not to tell her about Phallen given her experience with the judicial system of Praxis. General Vilanova asks about the Abnormals and what they want. All the Hollow Earth denizens want is to resume their way of life. This does not make the General happy to hear. Helen even went so far as to try and offer the safety of the Sanctuary, but not even Phallen could promise her Tribes cooperation. Just as she is about to get into a fight with the General Henry radio’s down to her telling her that he needs her up stairs. She tells him that she is busy and Henry replies to her to get unbusy. Helen makes her apologies and cuts the video conference.
Coming off the elevator Helen asks what wrong, if Henry has heard from Rana. Henry tells her no. But she still asks what’s wrong. Turning a corner Helen finds Will with John. Druitt has terrible news for her. “Adam’s alive. We’re all in grave danger.”
At the temporary military camp Kate and the Big Guy are going around and offering water to all the abnormals gathered. They won’t take the bottles of water hat she offers because she is a human and to them she is the strange. Biggie tells her to take a look around; all of the assembled are Abnormals. It doesn’t stop her from trying. Kate looks around and see’s one of the men sitting at a table working with hand made jewelry. She tells him that all the pieces are beautiful and asks if she can look at one closer. He gives his consent all the while keeping his eyes on her. Kate picks up one of the simpler necklaces with a blue stone as the only adornment on the leather cord. Before she could put it down the man tells her she can keep it. Kate tries to give it back, but he insists helping to put it on her. Then he tells her his name. He’s known as Gariss.
Back in the halls of the Sanctuary Helen demands that John explain himself. He tells her that he saw Adam a few days ago. It doesn’t make sense to Helen. The last time she saw Adam he was getting away with a very powerful device. John fills in some of the blanks for her. He cornered Adam at the transport after dispatching the two cannibals Worth had left to finish John off. Druitt grabs but Adam tries striking a deal with him, just as he did before in the river. Worth promises to give John all that he’s ever wanted. All John has to do is let him go. At first John assumes Adam is trying to provoke him into killing him faster but the more Adam talks the more John listens.
John tells Helen that Adam wanted the device to save his daughter, a daughter that died over a hundred years ago. Then Helen figures it out. Time travel. She claims it’s impossible and John says Adam found a way and a cure for her disease; a Praxian cure. He just needed to go back in time and give it to her. Helen asks, “But why would you allow him to live?” John answers, “He promised to take me with, back to Oxford before we injected the source blood.” John only wanted to go back in time to stop their younger selves from taking the Source Blood. If he succeeded them their lives would have been so different. John would have altered the course of history and that was the point of it all.
Helen points out that his blood was in the module and that John sent back the device. He only did that after Adam finished copying down the specifications by using time nodes. It was a stop gap measure to keep Helen from looking for Adam. But it didn’t last Adam disappeared on John. It was why he now came to Helen for help.
Walking through her office Will asks is Magnus is serious about all of this. If worth is able to change the time line then he could drastically alter history to the point where Will, the Sanctuary, the Abnormals from Hollow Earth, none of it could happen. She has to stop Adam and the only way she is going to do that is with John’s help. Coming to the elevator the door opens and there is John, her pack slung over one shoulder waiting her. He offers her his arm and Helen links her arm with his reluctantly.
At the refugee camp Phallen is in one of the many tents talking to another of her tribesmen by the name of Thelo. She is trying to convince him that the Sanctuary is the best place for them to be. It is the safest place for their people. He is unconvinced, but he will not stand in Phallen’s way.
Down in Hollow Earth John tries to convince Helen that he is apologetic, but she doesn’t believe him. Helen tells John that when they are done she never wants to see him again. John goes on the attack saying she is only doing this because he didn’t kill Worth for her. He tells her she is being a hypocrite for reviling his blood lust until she needs it for him to do her dirty work. Helen counters saying had she been in that module with Adam then she would have taken care of it and not been seduced by Adam’s lies.
At the Refugee camp Kate goes to visit Gariss, the abnormal she befriended. She offers him some geological sample stones that they keep at the Sanctuary telling him that they won’t be missed. He accepts them with a smile but keeps his eyes on the two members of his tribe who were watching him with Kate. One of the men insults Kate with Gariss reacting. Kate tells him that it’s ok because she doesn’t know what the words is that he used to insult her with. Gariss knows what it is. In the next second he and the man who insulted Kate were fighting.
In Magnus’s off Will is trying to placate Dr. Lee with telling her that there is something important that Magnus, and only Magnus, can take care of. It doesn’t matter to Dr. Lee. She tells Will that if Magnus isn’t back at the Sanctuary to talk to her or she will turn command of the camp over to General Vilanova. Looking to his left Will see’s a fight breaking out between two abnormals. He has to cut the call short and go to the refugee camp to find out what happened to cause a fight.
John leads Helen through one of the tunnels that would lead them to the city and she wonders why they haven’t encountered a garrison of soldiers from Praxis. He can only comment that it’s odd. They haven’t seen another living soul since coming to Hollow Earth. Before their eyes is the entire city of the once glorious Praxis, destroyed. They head down into the city to search the ruble. Helen can only wonder as to what happened with John confirming that it was Adam. Worth used the device in a test run. The destruction of the city was the end result. It was just another attempt to power the device. His first was in Carentan, a time bubble escaped and slipped through a crack in the ground, the same fissure Helen had driven the fire elemental into the earth back in 1944. Helen looks around at the destruction again saying they have to warn Henry and Will when something catches John’s eyes. Crouching down her finds a walking stick snapped in half; the same walking stick that belonged to Helen’s father Gregory Magnus. He had been living in Hollow Earth for a while.
Talking with Kate, Will asks how one abnormal insulting her escalated to a fight. Kate explains about Gariss and they over hear Thelo rallying the others of his tribe not to trust the humans or those of the Sanctuary. Some ways away Kate finds Gariss but he tells her that they shouldn’t be seen together as he offers her words of warning.
Coming upon a room in Hollow Earth, Helen and John find Adam’s Lab. She goes straight to the computers and copies the information on to a portable drive that she wants John to take back to the Sanctuary and to warn them about Praxis. John is reluctant to leave her alone should Adam return, but Helen tells him to go. She tells him that if Adam comes back she’ll be ready for him.
Will leaves Kate alone with the Big Guy while he goes and searches for Phallen. He finds her in the tent, only she’s dead. Thelo comes in minutes after him accusing him of killing her. Will runs from Thelo but then is cornered by two others of his kind. He has no choice but to turn and try to fight Thelo. They grapple and Will loses acquiring many bruises to the face and torso. The Big Guy steps in next and he and Thelo circle each other.
Back at the Sanctuary Will tosses away his ice pack as he asks Henry about Kate and the Big Guy. Henry’s had no luck contacting them, but that is the least of their worries. Henry tells Will that Praxis is gone, leveled, because of Worth’s device. But on a brighter side Druitt came back with a data drive and Henry is slowly going through it all. Will has no choice by to convene with Dr. Lee and Vilanova and tell them about Hollow Earth and Adam Worth and about Phallen murder with Thelo’s attempt to frame Will.
Still in Adam’s lab the lights continue to flicker as Helen works to unlock Adam’s data. The power fluctuates again causing Helen to draw her gun. Helen calls out to Adam, but there is no response and the lights continue to flicker.
At the Sanctuary the live feed to the camp has been cut and the monitors show nothing but interference. Then suddenly Thelo appears with a list of demands and some hostages. The Hollow Earth abnormals want an island where they can live and resume their way of life, if they don’t get it then the hostages they have will die. One of the hostages is the Big guy with no sign of Kate, she’s still in the camp somewhere in hiding.
Helen calls out to Adam with the answering call of John’s voice shouting her name as he comes back from his long trek from a suitable location so he could teleport to the sanctuary. Startled she aims her gun at him for a second with him asking what was wrong. She tells him it’s quiet. Just before them the lights fade again with Adam materializing, slightly out of phase with Druitt and Magnus. He’s been in the lab the entire time, just on a different plain. The only way to get him into the open is to siphon more power away from his console and the rift device.
Vilanova addresses Lee and asks for her to give him permission to for a strike team and allow him to go in and take care of the abnormals. Will argues against it, saying that things will only get worse if a strike team goes in. Lee gives Will one hour to get the abnormals talking or else Vilanova goes in with the strike team. The video conference is ended with both Henry and Will wondering why the abnormals are doing this. It’s a bad was to draw attention. But then they think that it must be a diversion for something else.
Helen manages to draw Adam out into the open, shoots him, but the bullet is ineffectual against him. Adam taunts Helen with changing the time line, but she refuses. She wouldn’t risk the lives of billions of people just for one life. But Adam would. He decided to go back to 1898; the year his daughter died. Then Adam phase shifted leaving Helen and John alone in the room.
At the Sanctuary Will and Henry unlock some of Worth’s data. For months Adam had been meeting with several different tribe leaders, including Thelo, and all off them in the same location. Will asks Henry to run a thermo graphic scan. That reveals massive hot spots located under three dormant volcano calderas. Getting Lee and Vilanova back he tells them what they’ve found and that finding actual physical proof would take a while. It’s a massive abnormal army waiting to invade.
